Artists and their art works had a significant impact on the pictorial imagination and record of Egypt and the Middle East. The beautiful colors of the Art Deco-inspired heliotypes and stylish wood engravings of Terre des Symboles would have captivated the nineteenth-century viewer. However, those who would eventually travel to Egypt would find the crowds, the dirt, and the apparent poverty of the people to be very different than what they had imagined.
